Tehran Strongly Blames Swedish Court for Upholding Life Sentence for Iranian Citizen

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kana’ani blasted the Stockholm Court of Appeals for upholding the life sentence for Iranian citizen and former judiciary official Hamid Nouri who has been jailed in Sweden on baseless allegations and spent nearly 4 years in solitary confinement in the European country.

to report «iusnews»; Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kana’ani blasted the Stockholm Court of Appeals for upholding the life sentence for Iranian citizen and former judiciary official Hamid Nouri who has been jailed in Sweden on baseless allegations and spent nearly 4 years in solitary confinement in the European country.

The Svea Court of Appeal in Sweden on Tuesday upheld a life sentence given to the Iranian citizen despite repeated objections from Tehran that the verdict is politically-motivated.

In response, Kana’ani stated Iran strongly condemns the verdict and considers it to be fundamentally “unacceptable”.

"It is regrettable that the Swedish court, without considering the standards of a fair trial, has chosen to pronounce such a destructive judgment," the spokesperson stressed.

Nouri was detained upon arrival at Stockholm Airport in November 2019. He has been put in solitary confinement since his arrest. The charges against Nouri stem from allegations leveled against him by members of the Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MKO) terror group. The former official has vehemently rejected the allegations.

Iranian officials have repeatedly called for the immediate release of Nouri, and cautioned Stockholm over the Iranian citizen's prolonged unlawful incarceration.

Kana’ani also said the Swedish judicial system, by “aligning with terror groups” involved in heinous acts against the people of Iran, Iraq and even Europe for decades, “jeopardizes the interests of both nations and the long-standing, historical relations between the two countries”.

" Iran reserves its right to take appropriate measures," the diplomat added.
