UN Food Agency Warns of Starvation in Gaza Strip

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) renewed its call for sustained humanitarian access to Gaza as stocks inside the besieged coastal enclave run out.

to report «iusnews»; The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) renewed its call for sustained humanitarian access to Gaza as stocks inside the besieged coastal enclave run out.

“Every day that passes pushes more and more people closer to starvation,” said WFP Regional Director for Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe Corinne Fleischer, Al-Jazeera reported.

WFP has food for 244,000 people close to the border with Gaza. More supplies are arriving in Northeastern Egypt, where an assistance hub is being set up, the UN agency said.

“Heart-wrenchingly, hundreds of people are queueing for hours every day to get bread rations at bakeries across Gaza while food is there, ready for distribution, just across the border,” said Samer Abdeljaber, WFP’s country director in Palestine.

On Saturday, the Head of UNRWA, the UN Relief Agency that works in the Gaza Strip, Philippe Lazzarini warned the people of Gaza are being "choked" by the continuous bombardment.

Lazzarini said that the continuous bombardment of Gaza, “together with the siege, are choking Gaza and its people”.

He continued that more than 700,000 women, children, and men now live in UNRWA schools and shelters.

“Basic services are crumbling. Everything is running out – food, water, medicine, and fuel,” he added.

Lazzarini said that Gazans feel de-humanized and abandoned, adding, “We must increase the volume of aid and use other crossings, including those within Israel, like Kerem Abu Salem.”

Israel waged the war on Gaza on October 7 after Hamas carried out the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm into the occupied territories in response to the occupying regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.

Tel Aviv has also blocked water, food, and electricity to Gaza, plunging the besieged territory into a humanitarian crisis.

Since the bombardment of Gaza began, Israeli air strikes have killed more than 11,100 Palestinians, including more that 8,000 children and women, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
