The Iranian people attended nationwide rallies on Sunday in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution which ended six decades of Pahlavi dictatorial rule and founded the Islamic Republic in Iran.

Millions of Iranians from all walks of life poured into the streets and squares all over the country to express their support for the cause, aspirations and ideals of the Islamic Revolution.

The celebrations began at 9:30 a.m. local time (06:00 GMT) in more than 1,400 cities and towns as well as over 38,000 villages across Iran.

The demonstrators carried placards reading "Death to America", "Death to Israel", "Death to Britain", and a number of other slogans in support of the Supreme Leader, and the Islamic establishment.

People also waved photos of the late founder of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and Martyr Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated in a 2020 US terror attack in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

In the capital, demonstrators marched across different routes to reach the Azadi Square, where President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi gave an address. The flight of colored balloons and iridescent papers from the Azadi Tower, the performance of professional parachutists of the Iranian Armed Forces and the mass recital of Iran’s national anthem were among the celebratory events held in the Azadi Square.

Hundreds of cameramen and journalists covered the massive rallies in Tehran and other cities.

Millions of Iranians hold nationwide rallies every year to celebrate the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which marks the overthrow of the US-backed Pahlavi dynasty.

The ceremonies are attended by high-ranking officials and thousands of people from all walks of life across the country.

Led by the Founder of the Revolution, Imam Khomeini, Iranians confronted the forces of US-proxy Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi in late 1977 to end his oppressive, cruel and autocratic rule over the country.

By December 1978, millions of Iranians would take to the streets in protest against the policies of the Shah on a regular basis.

Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned from exile to Iran to be received by millions of cheering crowds after the departure of the Shah in mid-January 1979. Two weeks later, the country saw the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

The final collapse of the Shah's regime came on February 11 when the military renounced its loyalty to the Shah and joined the revolutionary forces.

On this day 45 years ago, people took to the streets to celebrate the collapse of the Pahlavi Dynasty and the emergence of the new era.
