President: Iran Enriching Uranium for Peaceful Purpose

He regretted that the US and its Western allies pinned their hope on last year’s unrest over the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran and left the negotiating table, which was a miscalculation.

to report «iusnews»; President Rayeesi made the remarks during a press conference at the end of his trip to New York on Thursday, underscoring that Iran's nuclear program is completely peaceful and international observers have always confirmed the issue.

He refuted Western media claims about Iran increasing its uranium enrichment level, stating that his country merely enriches uranium to the level needed for the peaceful purposes.

The parliamentary law has "provided good conditions for the country and today our [uranium] enrichment has officially reached 60% in accordance with the law", he added.

In response to a question about Iran's move to bar multiple inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assigned to the country, the president stated, "Iran has no problem with the principle of inspection unless the performance of some inspectors causes Iran to lose confidence in them."

In this case, he added, it is natural that Iran demands the inspectors be changed.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rayeesi stressed that Tehran will never abandon its nuclear rights and expects the parties to a 2015 nuclear deal to take "practical" steps to fulfill their commitments under the landmark agreement.

He reiterated Tehran's compliance with its commitments according to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"Iran has never left the negotiating table and emphasizes that the US and European countries should return to their obligations (under the JCPOA)," he added.

He regretted that the US and its Western allies pinned their hope on last year’s unrest over the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran and left the negotiating table, which was a miscalculation.

"If the Americans are ready to fulfill their commitments, the ground will be prepared for [achieving] progress in the interactions and reaching a good agreement," Iran's president emphasized.

Iran has always had full cooperation with the IAEA and allowed it to visit the country’s nuclear sites and proved the peaceful nature of its nuclear program to the world by signing the 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers. However, Washington’s exit in May 2018 and its subsequent re-imposition of sanctions against Tehran left the future of the agreement in limbo.

Iranian officials have repeatedly called on Director general of the IAEA Rafael Grossi to stop Israeli-influenced attitude, and emphasized that Tehran would never surrender to the political behavior of the UN nuclear watchdog that is affected by the Zionist pressures.

Tehran calls the nuclear agency's approach unconstructive and destructive and urges the watchdog to avoid politicizing the issue and focus on technical aspects in line with the organization’s mandate.

Iran also rejects all accusations levelled by the West over the existence of undeclared nuclear activities or material in Iran, describing the move by the US and its European allies as a propaganda campaign against the country's nuclear program.

Tehran has on many occasions voiced its readiness to resolve differences with the UN nuclear body within a framework of constructive and mutual interaction and technical collaboration.

Back in early February, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami said that the IAEA has conducted nearly 2,000 inspections of the country's nuclear facilities only in the last two years.

Eslami stated that claims that Iran has reduced its obligations are pointless when it comes to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty (NPT) as Tehran is committed to the non-proliferation regime. He added that Tehran has no unfulfilled obligations in this regard.

The AEOI chief has described such allegations as part of a psychological warfare against Iran.

"The nuclear agency has carried out around two-thousand inspections [of countries’ nuclear facilities] between 2020 and 2022, and over these three years, five hundred inspections -- that is one-quarter of all inspections -- were conducted in Iran," the nuclear chief stressed.

Officials in Tehran say the West is waging a psychological warfare operation by accusing Iran of failing to honor its commitments under the nuclear deal, while the fact remains that Tehran met all its commitments under the agreement.

They have stressed that Iran is committed to its obligations under the agreement and as the signatory of the NPT, which is evident from numerous inspections of its nuclear facilities by the UN agency inspectors.
