Iran Urges UNSC to Condemn Israeli Assassination of IRGC Military Advisers in Syria

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian penned a letter to the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres over the recent Israeli assassination of five members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Syria, calling for strong condemnation of acts of terrorism by the UN Security Council.

to report «iusnews»; "The UN Security Council is expected, in fulfilling its duties under the United Nations Charter, to strongly condemn the Israeli regime’s acts of terrorism and other cases of unlawful use of force, as such provocative measures pose a serious threat to regional and international peace and security," Amir Abdollahian said in the letter.

He stressed that Israel “must bear the consequences of all other terrorist acts it has committed against Iranian military advisors”, adding, "The Zionist regime should also be compelled to abandon all its other destabilizing activities in the region."

"Iran reserves its inherent right, under international law and the United Nations Charter, to respond decisively and proportionately to such moves at the time and place of its choosing," the top diplomat continued.

The IRGC announced on Saturday that five of its members, who were serving as military advisors in Syria, have been martyred in an Israeli strike in Mezza neighborhood in Damascus.

Since 2011, Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy, as a result of which Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL) and other terror groups emerged in the country.

Iran maintains an advisory mission in the war-ravaged country at the request of Damascus, helping it in the face of foreign-backed terrorism. Israel has been a key supporter of terrorist groups during the war in the Middle Eastern country and has frequently targeted military positions inside Syria.

Several members of the IRGC have so far been martyred in the battle against terrorists in Syria. Tehran says its military advisers will powerfully continue the anti-terror fight in West Asia to enhance the regional security and stability in defiance of the Israeli regime’s terror operation against them.

In the letter, the Iranian foreign minister noted that the latest act of terrorism was the third of its kind to be committed against Iranian military advisors in recent months.

Amir Abdollahian stated that this heinous terrorist act has also revealed “the real terrorist nature of the Israeli regime, its destabilizing role in the region and the threat that it poses to the peace, security and stability of the region and beyond”.

Such acts of terror are "aimed at diverting attention away from the Israeli regime’s atrocities against the people of Palestine, particularly in Gaza", he noted, referring to the besieged strip that has been under Israel’s relentless bombardment for more than three months which resulted in death of more than 25,000.
