Iran had no link to the attack, the mission said in a statement published late on Sunday.
Three US Army soldiers were killed, and many others wounded by an overnight drone strike in Jordan, the United States Central Command announced on Sunday. The attack represents a significant escalation of simmering tensions in West Asia. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for the strike.
President Joe Biden claimed the strike was carried out by “Iran-backed militant groups”, while many US politicians blamed Tehran directly.
Prior to Friday, there had been at least 158 attacks on US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza.
Tehran has made no secret of its backing for the resistance movements in West Asia, but stresses that they make their own decisions and they are acting independently and not taking orders from Iran. Since the start of the Gaza crisis, Iranian officials have repeatedly cautioned that the current status in West Asia resembled a powder keg which could spiral out of control. Tehran warned that if diplomatic bids to stop the Israeli assault prove to be unsuccessful, there will be a risk of the conflict escalating uncontrollably, with multiple regional players joining the fight.
The Iranian mission to the UN added in its statement that the incident was part of the “conflict between the army of the United States of America and resistance groups in the region, which reciprocate retaliatory attacks”.
